Montana hunters are lucky. Not necessarily lucky in actual hunting, but lucky because Montana hunters are blessed with numerous species to hunt, many places to hunt, and long hunting seasons. This good fortune is superbly illustrated in the beautiful new book, “Unforgettable Days Afield: Montana Hunting,” by Riverbend Publishing of Helena.
“From the photos to the writing, this is an all-Montana book,” Riverbend publisher Chris Cauble said. “There’s never been a book like this. It has something for every Montana hunter.”
The hardcover gift book features 65 spectacular color photographs from Montana’s finest hunting and wildlife photographers. Top names such as Denver Bryan, Dale C. Spartas, Don Jones, and Dusan Smetana are well represented along with up-and-coming talents such as Mike Barlow. The photos portray all types of Montana hunting from bowhunting elk in early autumn to waterfowl hunting in late winter.
Well-written photo captions add a hunter’s thoughts about the scene. For example, one photo of a huge bull elk behind a small tree bears the caption, “You’ve been seen, and there’s no shot with that little tree in the way. Want to bet the elk spins away without giving you a shot? How do they do that?”

Images include horseback hunting, backpack hunting, elk camps, packing out deer and elk, and congratulations between hunters, including fathers and sons and daughters, for good hunts well done.
Dog lovers will enjoy the numerous photos of hunting dogs, from hard-charging Labrador retrievers to hard-working Brittany spaniels. As one caption notes, “A dog hunting is a happy dog.” Upland bird hunting photos include hunting for pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian partridges, and even turkeys. Waterfowl shots include mallards, teal, Canada geese, and snow geese.
“Unforgettable Days Afield” includes several notable quotations from Montana hunting writers such as Mark Henckel, John Barsness, Jim Posewitz, E. Donnall Thomas, Jr., and even Charles M. Russell. The carefully chosen passages convey the excitement and deep satisfaction of hunting here.
The book’s front cover features a spectacular sunset with a hunter on horseback leading a packhorse loaded with a large bull elk. The back cover photo shows a duck hunter and golden retriever anxiously scanning the sky for mallards.
“Unforgettable Days Afield: Montana Hunting” is the second in a series of books about Montana’s outdoors. Earlier this year Riverbend Publishing released “Unforgettable Days: Montana Trout Fishing,” which has garnered excellent reviews in local and national media. Both books are $14.95 and are available at bookstores and sporting goods stores.
