Montana book wins national award

A book on the National Bison Range by a Montana photographer and publisher has won first place in a national competition.

“Buffalo Country: America’s National Bison Range,” by wildlife photographer Donald Jones of Troy and produced by Riverbend Publishing of Helena, won the small book category of the National Association for Interpretation’s 2006 media awards.

Pat Jamieson, National Bison Range outdoor recreation planner, said it was rare for a publication about a unit of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to win. “The awards usually go to books about national parks,” Jamieson said. “But this book is so beautiful and so well done that it swept the competition.”

The book features nearly 70 color photos of bison and wildlife on the range, along with descriptions of bison natural history, Native American buffalo cultures, and range history.

Jamieson said “Buffalo Country” is a bestseller in the range’s visitor center at Moiese. It is also available at bookstores or by calling Riverbend Publishing at 1-866-787-2363. The book sells for $13.95.

Members of the National Association for Interpretation provide visitor education and outreach programs in national parks, forests, and other natural and cultural sites.

Jones is an acclaimed wildlife and outdoor photographer with several books to his credit. He said the bison range is one of his “favorite places” to photograph in Montana.
