New book on the National Bison Range now available

Book tells more than the story of the National Bison Range

Montana’s National Bison Range near Moiese is the subject of a new book featuring exceptional wildlife photography and interesting text about the range, bison, and Native Americans.

“Buffalo Country: America’s National Bison Range” by Riverbend Publishing of Helena is the only book on the 19,000-acre wildlife area, and the staff is happy to see it. “It’s a beautiful book,” National Bison Range outdoor recreation planner Pat Jamieson said. “I bet we won't be able to keep it on the shelves.”

All the color photos were actually taken on the range by Montana nature photographer Donald M. Jones. “It’s one of my favorite places in Montana,” Jones said. “I’ve been going there for more than 30 years and I always see something new.” The book features nearly 70 photos of bison, elk, deer, pronghorn antelope, and a surprising variety of small animals and birds.

The well-written text provides information about the range’s history, bison, and ecology. Even readers who have never been to the range will enjoy the descriptions of Native American buffalo culture. One section describes lengthy hunting trips known as “going to buffalo” when tribes from western Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington traveled over the Rocky Mountains to the buffalo plains.

“Buffalo Country” is a 72-page paperback that sells for $13.95. It is available at the National Bison Range, local bookstores, and by calling Riverbend Publishing toll-free 1-866-787-2363.
