FLY FISHING THE SOLITUDE: MONTANA

By Trapper Badovinac

Hardcover

120 pages

$29.95

ISBN: 1-931832-67-6

Book Description

After writing his first book “Fly Fishing Montana’s Missouri River”, fly-fishing guide Trapper Badovinac realized that while he enjoyed catching large trout on big rivers, he was often beckoned to the solitude of wild mountain streams where he could escape the buzz of cars, people, and the sometimes carnival atmosphere of it all. So Trapper went back to his roots, took all the questions he’d been asked about small streams, gathered all the stories, memories, and experiences of a lifetime, and wrote this book.

To be sure, this is a fly-fishing book, but venturing off the beaten path requires more than just a rudimentary knowledge of fishing. Trapper tells you how to find and evaluate new waters from the comfort of your home or office. He explains the importance of water temperatures, insect activity, holding water, and wading stealth. He recommends specific rods, reels, fly lines, and fly patterns. He shares his personal formula for tying a small-stream leader, provides on-stream strategies to deal with fly refusals and presentation nproblems, teaches “dabbing” and “high stick” casting techniques, and discusses route finding, off-trail hazards, and safety.

As a bonus, “Fly Fishing the Solitude Montana” contains detailed information on four great Montana streams that Trapper found, evaluated, and fished using the methods in this book. On every page the photography will take your breath away, the stories will make you laugh, and the easy-to-understand text will give you insight into finding your own fly-fishing solitude.

About the Author

Trapper Badovinac can't remember a time when he didn't love to fish. His father and grandfather taught him the sport when he was four years old, and he soon learned to appreciate the excitement only a mountain stream could deliver. He has been a professional fishing guide for over a decade, and his articles have been published widely. He produces all his own flies and ties commercially for shops in Colorado and Montana. His expertise and innovative techniques are lauded in the fly fishing community.

In May of 2003 he released his first book Fly Fishing Montana's Missouri River. His second book, Fly Fishing the Solitude–Montana offers pragmatic advice coupled with beautiful photography and illustrations. This book gives the reader a step-by-step guide to finding, evaluating, and fishing small streams in Montana.

This well versed outdoorsman is a much sought after lecturer. He speaks to clubs all over the United States during the winter months. His presentations are professional, packed with "how to" information, and are illustrated with his award winning photography.

Trapper takes soldiers injured in Iraq or Afghanistan on guided float trips down the Smith River of Montana, teaching them fly fishing techniques, camping etiquette, and boating basics in order to help them build confidence and restore their courage in a program dubbed ‘Wounded Warriors’. "I've taught hundreds of people to fly fish but these young men are so very appreciative and so very great to be with, that I cannot find words to adequately express just how honored I feel to be able to spend time with them teaching them the joys of fishing in Montana.”

Trapper approaches angling with a laid–back philosophy. He assures that, in the sport of fly fishing, the right education and experience is more important than years of experience, and he believes it is a sport anyone can enjoy. "It's a chance to immerse yourself in nature, and standing in a good trout stream testing your skills is a great way to give yourself a break from the sometimes-chaotic world we live in. This very simple and quiet sport can transform you by making your world one of simple pleasures." He lives in the woods outside Helena, Montana.

Press Release

NEW BOOK GIVES TIPS, TRICKS, ADVICE TO FLY FISHERS

Longtime fly-fishing guide Trapper Badovinac has released his latest book, “Fly Fishing the Solitude: Montana.” Produced by Riverbend Publishing, this beautiful book will lead the dedicated fisherman away from the beaten path and into the wonderland of lesser known trout streams.

Trapper adopted Montana as his home many years ago, after Colorado got too crowded. “I was looking at too much concrete,” he says. “I needed more trees.”  In Montana, he found a fisherman’s paradise in the state’s lesser-known brooks and streams. “If you want to fish for trout while listening to traffic and trains and tourists, then stick to the big, popular rivers. But if you prefer a bit of privacy and are the type who seeks out solitude and seclusion, then it’s worth the extra effort to find Montana’s hidden hideaways,” he says. “Small streams can offer just as much fun to fishermen as big rivers.” Trapper makes his home near Helena, where he has ready access to many such streams.

In this book, Trapper condenses knowledge borne of years of experience as a professional fishing guide into 120 pages. Each page is packed with practical tips, handy tricks, and down-to-earth advice, interspersed with stories from his own experience. The book is richly textured with photographs that illustrate the magic and magnificence of Montana’s smaller waterways. The book explains how to research, discover, and fish small fishing streams, and it includes detailed descriptions of four such Montana streams that Trapper found using his techniques.
